11th Day of Advent - Presents from my childhood

I wonder if my grandchildren will remember years from now when they are grown up the presents they got for Christmas when they were little.
Children have so many things now but they seem to loose interest quickly.  I'm one of four and my parents didn't have the money to buy us loads of toys, we always had our main present, the one we had asked Santa for, but only a few extra presents as surprises along with chocolates and always there was an orange at the bottom of our pillow cases, (we didn't have a sack or a stocking, we always hung a pillow case on our bedroom door :-)

I remember quite a lot of my main presents, the 'Julie' doll I had when I was around four, another doll called Rosemary and when I was a little older, the radio, which I loved and mine and my sister's joint present one year, a stereo.  Oh I loved that stereo!

And of course everyone had a Top of The Pops album!

I remember we had this one
Does anyone else remember these albums?  They were not even the original artists, lol but I played it over and over, and I was always careful to hold the record by the edge and not put my fingers prints all over the surface :-)

My brother bought me my first proper album that year too, it was Dreams are Nuthin' More than Wishes  by David Cassidy.  I do still have that album, and I still play it, and I still like it :-)

Another year I asked for a typewriter, I think this was a very popular toy of the time, mine was a mustard coloured Petite Typewriter the same as the one below.

I remember the typewriter well but had forgotten what the case looked like until I started my search

I absolutely loved my typewriter and spent hours playing 'offices', sadly I don't have it anymore, I don't know what happened to it.  Funny too how I now work in an office and I still love to type to this day, I love it if any of the lads at work bring me letters and documents to type up, (sad, I know!)

I didn't always get what I asked for though.  I always wanted Spirograph but Santa never did leave it for me :-(

What Christmas presents do you remember from your childhood?  Was there something you asked for that Santa didn't leave?

We always hung a pillow case, which always had an apple, an orange and a handful of nuts at the bottom. My 1st present I can remember was a bright red dolls pram. Every time I think of it I find a smile on my face.

I started reading at a very young age and my most cherished gifts (which I still have) are my Nancy Drew series. Every once in awhile I still pull them out and read them.

God bless.

I think that's great that you can remember the gifts on your list when you were a kid. I can remember getting dolls, and in my teen years, things like an electric shaver and hair dryer. My folks didn't have a lot of money either and there were 4 of us kids. We were happy with what we got. We were also given the oranges and nuts in stockings.

I remember those Top of the Pops albums, I had a few of them, and I had a Petite Typewriter, I'd forgotten about that as I got a Brother typewriter when I was older. I didn't get a Spirograph but my older sister had one so I used that. One of my favourite presents was a Post Office set. I remember that Christmas my dad was in bed with a slipped disc and that present was in his bedroom. He said that Santa had left it there by mistake. We always opened our presents downstairs so I think he just wanted to see me open something. I always wanted a Tiny Tears but I didn't get one. I wanted a doll which would wee but I don't think my mum was keen.

I had quite a few of those Top of the Pops albums and for years didn't even realise it wasn't the proper people - so innocent!
Spirographs were a bit overated so you didn't miss too much. Most of our big presents were secondhand so I had a Massive heavy typewriter very old - should have kept it - it would be antique now.

We had that album at our house too. No doubt we bought it in Woolworths. I still can't believe that shop is no more!

A Bride doll.... Which I later learned, -smile- my mother had made the compete bridal dress for me. She was an amazing seamstress.

On the feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even."

I had a typewriter, very similar, think it was turquoise. Wasn't into dolls, was quite a tomboy back in the day. LOVED and still have my Ouija board. Mom and I would play with it for hours. My best friend, Sue and I did too. It's really the only thing I kept from childhood. We would get a main present, then some clothes...you know necessary stuff. I think you're right on the mark. Today, kids get so much they don't play or take care of most of it.

We didn't have much money either and we weren't able to ask Santa for anything, though we always had a lovely pillowcase full of small presents, which made it seem like we got loads of presents. Christmasses seemed so much simpler back in the day. I think one of my most favourite presents was Spirograph; I was absolutely ecstatic over it! I'd love to be able to have one now. Best, Jane x
