Black blue and green

Our local council has implemented a new recycling scheme starting in April and today was delivery day for our new bins.

From April our normal black bin waste will be collected every two weeks.  I have no problem with that I only put it out every two weeks anyway.  We will still use our blue bag for paper and cardboard, again every other week, same as before. There is a yearly fee for our green garden waste bin, (which we pay) and that is collected every two weeks.  But now we have a blue 240 litre bin for plastic, cans and glass, again to be collected every other week.  I can't see me putting this out every other week, it's going to take us ages to fill even half way!

We also now have waste food bins.

The smaller one is supposed to be kept in your kitchen for food waste and then emptied into the larger container which will be collected every week.

Like many people posting on the local FB page I will not be using either of these two food waste bins.  For starters we don't have a big kitchen so nowhere to put it, there is just enough room under my sink for the waste bin and some general cleaning things, so it can't go there, and in any case we have very little food waste.  There has been valid concerns raised over attracting rats in the garden with the food bin.

They are locked by putting the handle down, but, my smaller one came with the side bent meaning the handle doesn't go down, good start, but as I said I won't be using them anyway.

Having all these bins is all well and good, but less packaging on items would be even better, and our council only actually recycles 35% of collections, way below the national target.

The food waste scheme was rolled out in other boroughs and the take up was so little that it was abandoned not long after.  So perhaps council money could have been put to better use?

There is also the problem of storing all these bins!
We have side gate and luckily enough room in that walk up to the garden to store them, but there are a lot of terraced houses here in the UK which do not have side entrances and bins are kept on the pavement, (looks awful and unsightly), but other than pull the bin through the house what do they do?

I'll probably take the larger of the food bins down the allotment, it'll come in handy to store my gloves and trowel in 🤭

What does your council do in the way of waste and recycling collections?

Our first food collection will be end of the month, I compost everything I can, so our bins won't have much in, I don't use the council garden waste system. We have two other council bins, and keep a box for glass.

We don't have food waste bins yet, but I can't see us using them as we don't have much food waste, but we do have 2 compost bins. I suppose we could put things that can't be composted into it. At the moment we have a rubbish bin, a garden wsste bin (paid for) a general recycling bin for glass, plastic food containers, used foil etc and a bin for paper and cardboard.

We can pay to have a garden bin, but nowhere to store it. Our general rubbish bin is green, a blue bag for glass, black bin for cardboard, tin, plastics. Apparently we are due to have food waste bins, but we don't have food waste in this house, so it will probably end up in the shed as a bird food storage container. Xx

Our 'new' collection scheme started last April or was it June???

It is what it is, we have to put up with it!
At least rubbish is being collected for which I am grateful.
There have been plenty of grumbles ... it's meant to be progress but is it?

Hope your new scheme goes well.

All the best Jan

We have two bins only. One for trash that can not be recycled which is picked up every week. The other is our recycle bin which is picked up every second week. Our youngest son has three bins, one for trash that can not be recycled, a recycle bin and a bin for yard waste, peelings and such as well.

God bless.

We have 5 bins , it takes time to sort things , but that's hubby's job.
It's not to bad and works well you soon get use to it . It stops rats coming in to the garden .and is much cleaner .

In our part of Nottinghamshire we have a blue bin for recycling (emptied every 2 weeks) and a green bin for other waste (also emptied every 2 weeks). We had an option to have a black bin for glass which we chose not to have. There is also the option for a brown bin for garden waste - at a cost- but again we chose not to have. We use our local tip a lot and husband takes the occasional bag to the big skips on the building site where he works. As yet, we've not been given a food waste bin.

We have a black bin for general waste, a green bin for all recycling and a brown bin for garden waste, all collected fortnightly and no charge for any. Leeds City Council is trialling a food waste collection in three areas of the city whereby food waste is added to the existing brown garden waste bin. We're not in the trial but it will be interesting to see what happens next. I can't say I'm in favour of having more and more bins for different things, perhaps this is the answer.
